I know, I know, I know…two mentions of NPR articles in a row. But seriously, if you don’t listen to (or read) NPR, it comes highly suggested by us at PlusCat.

Moving on.

NPR published an article this week, called “The Decade in Music: The Way We Listen Now,” regarding the trends in music listening we have seen over the years, and how they hit the gas hard last decade. With the rise of MP3 players and music pirating (and the collapse of physical album sales), the way consumers look for music and the record industry markets music is drastically different.

Anyways, for recording industry geeks, like myself, I suggest you check out the article; and of course, that you subscribe to NPR podcasts, or bookmark NPR.com, or turn your radio dial, you know, whatever.

-John

P.s. To those reading over at NPR, I’d love a t-shirt.

On the brink of fall, when the air starts to get a little more crisp as the sun goes down, and as we see the days get just a little shorter, it’s hard to say if an album has ever been released at a more perfect time.

S. Carey, best known until this point as Bon Iver‘s drummer, is releasing a record of his own this coming Tuesday entitled, “All We Grow,” off Jagjaguwar. Having been introduced to the single, “In The Dirt” by Pat the other day, and seeing the name dropped here and there, I sat down this morning and, on NPR’s First Listen, got to hear to S. Carey’s debut in it’s entirety. I will submit no review on this album, because nothing I say will do it any justice. Just listen to it.

In The Dirt – S. Carey

Carey in playing an in-store at the Electric Fetus this coming Thursday, the 26th, followed by his CD Release at The Southern Theater the next night, the 27th.

Kind Reader,

I wanted to point you in the direction of a great blog that I recently found. The creator (affectionately known as Dubin) releases great (seriously, great) mixes about once a month. He also is a great writer and photographer. This is a blog you should definitely add to your blog roll. Below is the the cover art to his most recent mix. Click it, and you will be presented with his site. It comes highly recommended by all of us at PC!

. : mid-august 2010 : .

So its not exactly the first of the month, but I promise this is worth the wait. I managed to get some exclusives this month.. brand new unreleased songs from The Gay Blades, Recover (a track from the forth coming record Challenger)and Far (Their last unreleased song.. its a PJ Harvey Cover), Bad Books (Kevin Devine & Manchester Orchestra) plus a bunch more.. As you may have noticed I went with something slightly different this month for the cover with a little help from my friend Amy who does a very cool site called fleisher & check it out.

Last week, Arcade Fire played the Madison Square Garden and had it broadcast live using VEVO through Youtube; a creative new way to promote a new album (if I do say so myself).

Also, I picked up the new record on the first night of a ten day stint house sitting in, you guessed it, the suburbs. So, I’ve made it a point to listen to this record extensively, and I plan on writing more about it soon. But, for now, a video of a song off the new record from their Madison Square Garden show. The aptly named title track. Enjoy.

(who stole)

An audience dines as a musician sings. Elegant music may fold or seep it’s way into descussion or ideas in question, but most sweetly will it fit inside your crystal beaker. As wine breaths, music steams forth. May it float, may it compound and rise, it is not exactly the same song what was introduced. Humidity will instruct the morning dew to lie flat or collect in beads underside a leaf, likesay a musician will drink with an audience.

Now glasses are being refilled while the last song lingers to smile and pray the ever developing breaths of it’s assumed image don’t dissolve. It’s our connection to the residence of a song that keeps it from departing, not the sparkle of the crystal or the vintage of the wine.

Months ago, I was lucky enough to do an interview with Someone Still Loves You, Boris Yeltsin while they were finishing up their newest record, now titled “Let it Sway.” It is the band’s third full length release, produced by Death Cab For Cutie’s Chris Walla, is their second off of Polyvinyl records. This record is yet another great release from a young band that continues to show growth in their songwriting.

Keep and eye out for tour dates and head over to Polyvinyl to stream a few songs and you can buy “Let it Sway.”

I discovered this band, Local Natives, randomly a few weeks back, and to be honest, I had no idea what I thought about them. One moment I was completely electrified, the next I was utterly confused (not bad confused, but confused as to whether or not this band was from a different planet and maybe I just couldn’t understand).

But I’ve given them time. And their sound is so unique to me that I just can’t let it go, and that is the charm of this band. I believe it is a rare thing for a new band to come out and where your only immediate reaction is, “What the fuck?” This band’s first record, Gorilla Manor, demands listen after listen after listen, and each time I discover one more thing to make me think, What the fuck?” And that, my friends, is what the rewind button is for.

Gorilla Manor was funded by the band themselves, and aside from the engineer, was produced by them. All five guys collaborate on the songwriting, on the artwork, and on the production aspects of their recordings. What will really draw in listeners is the hyperactive percussion, the melody driven guitars, and the three part harmonies–these things are what make this band stand out.

I’ve included 3 videos after the jump for a few reasons. One, to show off the diversity of this band. Two, to show off their range as a live band. And lastly, because they are all so damn cool I couldn’t leave any of them out.

The first video is the first song I heard by them, Wide Eyes. It is a great introduction to the band.

Second, this song took me a little while to fully appreciate. But it’s a good example of the band’s diversity and their individual talent.

And last, if you watch any of these videos, watch this in it’s entirety. It’s one of the best live performances I’ve seen.
