Last year was, in my opinion, one of the best years for new music in a long time. The independent as well as major artist community saw quite the outflow of albums that begged repeated listens; in fact, I am still catching up on some of the records that came out last year.

Kevin Devine To Release Two 7” Singles

In preparation for the release of Between The Concrete And Clouds, the follow-up to the highly acclaimed 2009 release, “Brother’s Blood,” Kevin Devine, who has spent the better part of the passed year performing and promoting the release of Bad Books debut record, a group that combined KD and Manchester Orchestra, has announced the release of two new 7” singles, due out May 17th. Released through Academy Fight Songs, the singles “Luxembourg” and “Part Of The Whole” are just two of the new songs Devine will be debuting during two different west coast residencies; one stint in LA and one in Portland. I have heard that these shows are full of surprises and guests, featuring new material and old Kevin Devine classics. I just wish he was doing this in Minneapolis, but, this gives me one more reason to add to my list of why I want to move to California.

This is Manchester Orchestra’s new single, “Simple Math.”

Now, Patrick and I have been following this band since “I’m Like A Virgin Losing A Child” came out in 2006, and have seen them live more times than we can count on both hands. For us, this band can do no wrong. (I know you all have a band like that). We have been lucky enough to have followed this band since their early days, (I took a picture with Andy Hull when he couldn’t have been older than 19, see below). All that being said, this new single portrays a side of this band that I knew they had within them. They are taking a lot of risks on this record (so I’ve heard), as well as on this song, all for the sake of artistic honesty. Andy has said that this is everything he has ever wanted to make in a record. I can’t remember a time when I have been so excited for a release. Expect Plus Cat to be buzzing around this record a lot for the next few months.

Andy and myself four years ago. (And yes, for some reason I thought Wolfmother was cool).
